A Big Surprise from Madera, Calif.

Michael Leven, a smart, dedicated winemaker, makes relatively small amounts of well-crafted wines in Madera, Calif., not previously well-known for other than fortified wines. But Leven's grapes, are not from that hot valley area. They're from Monterey County and the Sierra foothills, and Madera happens to be halfway between those premium grape-growing regions.

Mariposa Wine Company Officially Opens Tasting Room
July 29, 2006 – Madera Tribune
The Mariposa Wine Company Tasting Room is officially open, said Michael Leven, winemaker for the company operating just north of Madera in a former pistachio processing plant. While scrambling to be available for Madera Wine Trail patrons in June, Leven said, the hundreds of details involved have finally come together, qualifying the winery for its "official soft opening to see how everything shakes out."
