2002 Yosemite View Merlot

Tasting Notes
When bottled, our 2002 Merlot was awkward and tough, with somewhat hard tannins. It has since lost that rustic character and is now full-flavored with intriguing high-tone berry and cedar aromas. On the palate it shows classic earthy tones, with a touch of mint and herb. Still, the wine is not for the faint-of-heart, and is best enjoyed with a meal of hearty foods.

Fermentation Data
All lots were crushed, then fermented in open top tanks and hand punched until dryness, after which they underwent an extended maceration in the name of developing structure and complexity. The individual lots were barreled and aged separately, and combined shortly before bottling.

Vineyard Data
The majority of this blend comes from the Dacanay Vineyard, situated on a small, southwest facing hillside above the town of Bootjack at about 3,000’ elevation. Here, the nights are very cool, which keeps the grapes from ripening too quickly and losing their color and acidity. Big and tough, its structure and tannins give our Merlot its backbone and depth. The other component of this bottling is an old-vine Carignane from Lodi. It gives the blend its fleshiness, black fruit flavors, and softens the rough edges of the finished wine.

Yosemite View Winery
The Yosemite View Winery sources much of its fruit from the southern Sierra Foothills near Mariposa, California, just 20 miles from the world-famous national park after which the brand is named. Wines from this mountain growing region have a big, forward style and very distinct personalities; much like the areas’ Gold Rush pioneers. Our winemaker blends Yosemite View wines so they retain this inherent, bold character, but are also balanced and delicious for your near-term enjoyment.

Yosemite View produces wine only from grape varietals that grow well in this unique and historic area. Offerings include this ageworthy Cabernet Sauvignon, a fruity and crisp Sauvignon Blanc, a firm, structured Syrah, and finally, a big, full-throttle Zinfandel, for which the appellation is best known.
