Tasting Notes
This wine has a dark ruby hue, with good density of color. At first the wine is closed in on the nose, but soon the blackberry
and black pepper come out. Dark currant and black plum flavors then take center stage, followed by a chocolate/coffee nuance, and more subtle notes of roasted
meat, earth, and a light herbal edge. As with most reds from the Sierras, the tannins are firm, and the wine has a chewy finish. Our 2002 Syrah is best served
with strongly flavored foods, like steak, or bold tomato-based pasta sauces.
Vineyard Data
The majority of grapes that went into this blend came from E.J. and Shirley Miller's Temperance Creek Vineyard in Hunter’s Valley. This site is very remote, very quaint, and at harvest time, VERY HOT! As a result of the latter trait, the grapes from this vineyard get really ripe, really fast at the end, so we have very little notice when the time to pick arrives. This hearty foothill wine is the backbone of our Syrah blend. The remainder of Syrah came from two vineyards in Monterey County; the G.O. and Massa Vineyards. These vineyards lend a floral perfume, plum flavors, and a fleshy texture to the finished blend.
Yosemite View Winery
The Yosemite View Winery sources much of its fruit from the southern Sierra Foothills near Mariposa, California, just 20 miles from the world-famous national park after which the brand is named. Wines from this mountain growing region have a big, forward style and very distinct personalities; much like the areas’ Gold Rush pioneers. Our winemaker blends Yosemite View wines so they retain this inherent, bold character, but are also balanced and delicious for your near-term enjoyment.
Yosemite View produces wine only from grape varietals that grow well in this unique and historic area. Offerings include this well-structured Syrah, a fruity and crisp Sauvignon Blanc, a hearty Merlot, an ageworthy Cabernet Sauvignon, and finally, a big, full-throttle Zinfandel, for which the appellation is best known.
