2001 Yosemite View Zinfandel

Tasting Notes
One of the defining characteristics of this wine is its intense spiciness. It also has a zesty, bright red berry character, with a sweet, chocolaty finish. While the wine is analytically dry, this perceived sweetness is actually brought about by all that French oak! What’s missing is any hint of ‘hotness’ or excessive alcohol one sometimes finds in Sierra Zinfandels. Our 2001 Zinfandel can match up to any dish calling for a big, full-throttled wine; pastas, meats, even dark chocolate. For a real eye-opening treat, serve this wine at dessert paired with Chocolate Decadence covered by a concentrated raspberry puree.

Fermentation Data
The wine was put into seasoned American and French barrels, where it aged for 30 months with minimal handling and just one racking during that time. Prior to bottling, it was blent with 15% Syrah (also from the Miller’s vineyard) which helped give the wine some depth, dark fruit flavors and a little bit of a tannic backbone.

Vineyard Data
The Miller family planted and has lovingly nurtured their Temperance Creek Vineyard since the mid-1980’s. It is located in the Sierra Foothills in Mariposa County, about two miles (as the crow flies) from the remote enclave of Hornitos, California. However, it is an act of faith to actually drive there, as the route takes you down an endless, rocky road, which just when you think it CANNOT POSSIBLY be any more remote, veers to the right onto an even less hospitable path. Then, approximately 100 yards from the end of the Earth, this little vineyard pops up out of nowhere. And it pumps out some very nice Zinfandel. Bigger some years than others, but never for the faint of heart, the fruit from the Miller’s vineyard makes wines typical of the monster Zins for which the Sierra Foothills appellation is widely known.

Yosemite View Winery
Yosemite View produces wine only from grape varietals that grow well in this unique and historic area. Offerings include this big, full-throttle Zinfanel (for which the appellation is best known), an ageworthy Cabernet Sauvignon, a fruity and crisp Sauvignon Blanc, a hearty Merlot, and a firm, structured Syrah.
